Another senior member of our team, Terynn Chan is a handler powerhouse only in her 3rd year. Similar to other Vancouver natives on the TBirds, Terynn came out of a strong Vancouver Junior Ultimate scene and found her chance to truly shine at the College level. A dominant force in the air, Terynn “Twiggy” Chan’s long branchy arms always find their way over every defender and to the disc. Her io flick breaks always best any mark and you can find her stats always stacked with assists, be them io breaks at the endzone or from her beauty backhand hucks. You can be sure to find Twiggy covered in tights and longsleeves, shying away from the sun under the shade of trees (her natural habitat) but when it’s time to play, she is a force to be reckoned with.
Name: Terynn Chan
Field of study: Kinesiology
Position: D-line handler
How did you start playing ultimate?
I started in grade 11 when my younger brother started and he needed someone to throw with.
Who is your most influential player?
My brother Evan Chan, because he is an amazing player and always willing to help me improve my throws. Having him around really challenges and motivates me to improve.
What’s your favourite ultimate moment?
There isn’t a moment that really stands out to me… But my favourite team to play on has been UBC though. College level playing is really fun.
What’s your favourite throw?
IO flick break in the endzone for the assist.
What hobbies do you have outside of ultimate?
Studying, eating, sleeping, climbing. School and grades are really important to me as I’m pursuing optometry school after graduation.
What club/elite teams have you played on?
Team Canada U19 2012 and U23 2013.
Where did the nickname “Twiggy” come from?
Last year my friend Tammy Chou was on the team and together we were “Twiggy” and “Stumpy”.
Currently finishing up her 3rd year of university, Terynn is a diligent student, teammate, sister, daughter and friend. While striving for perfection in school to accomplish her dream of optometry, she still manages to attend three practices a week and pursue her other interests such as climbing. Check out our fundraising page for info on how to support Terynn and the rest of the UBC TBirds Ultimate Team.
